Dignified and compassionate pet euthanasia services

Most people hope that when the time is near for a pet to pass, it happens naturally and peacefully. Unfortunately, that is seldom the case. As a responsible pet owner, you may need to consider euthanasia, when your cat or dog is suffering or has minimal quality of life. You are not alone in this decision. The team at Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital in Riverview, FL provides supportive assistance.

When is the right time for Riverview, Brandon, Bloomingdale, Ybor City, Tampa Bay, and Wesley Chapel area, FL pet owners to consider euthanasia?

There is no mathematical formula to indicate the right time for putting an old dog down or saying goodbye to a gravely ill cat. It is a very tough choice, and one we deeply respect.

One of our experienced veterinarians examines your pet and evaluates health issues. The doctor explains end of life services for pets, including expense, level of at home care required, and how long the animal’s life is likely to be prolonged with treatment. Together, you decide if and when the time is right for euthanasia, based on your situation.

Preparing for a non-traumatic procedure

Euthanasia is performed quietly and discreetly at Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital. A mild sedative can be administered first to calm your pet. Then a barbiturate is introduced into a vein in the leg. The drug is administered in a large enough dose to stop heart and breathing function in just a minute or two.

If you decide on euthanasia, these tips can make the transition easier:

  • Talk with children in the family about your decision. Sharing the book, “When a Pet Dies” by Fred Rogers is a good way to open a gentle discussion.
  • Tell other pets in the household, too. While we cannot truly know if they understand, explaining why they will not see their friend again can be therapeutic for you.
  • Think about remaining in the treatment room with your pet. One of our techs will compassionately assist the doctor, but your presence can be powerfully comforting to your pet.
  • Whether or not you stay with the animal, bring a favorite bed or blanket as a source of familiar security.
  • Know that your decision and the result come from a special place of love for your pet.

Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital in Riverview, FL provides compassionate care for all stages of your pet’s life for Riverview, Brandon, Bloomingdale, Ybor City, Tampa Bay, and Wesley Chapel area pet owners. Call (813) 670-8881 to schedule an appointment.
