Pet Spaying and Neutering

Rabbits are great pets … and remarkably prolific! The importance of neutering and spaying your pet bunny

Rabbits are famously, remarkably prolific. They produce large litters, have the unique capacity to rebreed immediately after giving birth and boast a gestation period of just one month. Controlling the rabbit population is but one of many good reasons to have your pet bunny neutered or spayed. Not unlike neutering and spaying for other companion animals, these procedures also:

  • Resolve the risk factors for cancers of the reproductive organs (uterine, testicular, mammary)
  • Support better relationships with other bunnies, pets, and people in your household
  • Eliminate annoying, undesirable, and even dangerous behaviors (spraying, aggression, mating-related urges)

At Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital & Grooming in Riverview, Florida, Dr. Keshava Eega takes a special interest and has developed considerable expertise in companion animal wellness, preventative care, and behavior.

The orchiectomy (neuter) and ovariohysterectomy (spay) are foundational to a wellness program that supports your rabbit’s sustained health and happiness and the strongest, healthiest bonds between you and the bunny.

They also present an affordable way to avoid the considerable costs of treating complications among unaltered bunnies and supporting pregnant rabbits and their many large litters.

When in our highly qualified and experienced hands, these standard procedures are safe and minimize or eliminate many risks that can threaten your rabbit’s overall health and quality of life.

A few more important points:

  • Rabbits can be altered as soon as they are sexually mature, at around four months and eight to 12 weeks for females and males, respectively.
  • Dr. Eega can advise on the appropriate timing of the procedure for your pet based on age, health, and other factors.
  • Generally, the rare and minimal risks accompanying this routine surgical procedure pale compared to the health risks associated with keeping unaltered rabbits.
  • We can advise on ways to care for your bunny before and after treatment and any things to watch for following their procedure.

Rabbits are wonderful pets. Those who have had the great joy of calling one a family member know that they are lovable, smart, active, and highly entertaining. They deserve to enjoy the healthiest, longest lives possible.

In partnership with you at Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital & Grooming, we can ensure they have many happy, healthy years. Call (813) 670-8881 to schedule an appointment at our Riverview, FL clinic. We will get your rabbit into a healthy routine of visits for preventive care.
