Pet Skin Care and How to Help Your Dog Avoid Summertime Skin Conditions

Your dog likely loves many of the same summertime activities you do. The bonds formed between you and your pet as you make wonderful outdoor memories are truly special. Basking in that summertime sun is healthy but, just like with people, your dog’s skin being exposed outside could lead to some troublesome issues or even life-threatening conditions. Hot spots, bacterial infections, external parasites (fleas and mites), and allergies to material in the air can all lead to skin problems for your dog. Those looking for a team they can trust in Riverview, Florida, go to see Dr. Keshava Eega and the skilled team at Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital & Grooming.

Skin Conditions Brought on by Allergies

Have you ever found yourself suffering from allergies (either seasonal or year-round)? Allergens spread from weeds, trees, and grass can also affect your dog. When triggered, your dog’s allergies can flare up. This can happen to both indoor as well as outdoor dogs. With warm weather provided by summer, your dog is likely to be outside more for various activities. Allergies can manifest as both skin and ear conditions, including:

  • Issues with biting, scratching, licking, or rubbing of the skin. Also, shaking of the head.
  • Constant licking of the paws could be a sign of a skin condition.
  • Skin which has become red or greasy. Skin that has developed scabs, red bumps, or lost hair caused by possible secondary infection.
  • Red, irritated ears that may have a waxy or pus discharge.
  • Unpleasant odor emanating from the ears.

Tips for At-Home Care

When your dog has developed a skin condition that is causing obvious discomfort, try a bath. Washing your dog with a shampoo that is oatmeal-based can help reduce a mild itch. Bathing and rinsing your dog regularly during months when there is an abundance of pollen in the air can help prevent future skin problems. When you have had your dog outside, wipe the paws and underbelly afterward to remove pollen.

If your dog suffers from summertime skin conditions, reach out to Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital & Grooming in Riverview, Florida. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Keshava Eega, call (813) 670-8881 today.
