Questions to ask in your search for a new veterinarian in your area

Becoming attached to your pet’s veterinarian can be bittersweet. While it’s great to have somebody you and your pet are comfortable with, not all relationships last forever. Maybe your veterinarian has decided to retire. Perhaps you have decided to move away. Whatever the case may be, finding someone you can trust your pet with can be difficult.

Pet owners in the Wesley Chapel, Florida area, entrust the care of their pets to the team at the Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital. If you are looking for a veterinarian to care for your pets, here are some common questions you can ask to make choosing one a lot easier.

Breed familiarity

When looking for a veterinarian, it is always useful to ask if they have experience treating your specific breed of dog, cat, etc. If they do not, that does not mean you shouldn’t trust them to care for your pet, but it may provide you some comfort knowing they have that experience. A veterinarian familiar with your pet’s breed may have an edge when it comes to anticipating issues or handling specific medical problems swiftly. Asking this question is essential, but you should not hold it against the veterinarian if they answer no.

Depth of experience

How long a veterinarian has been in practice may not necessarily reflect their expertise, but this is an important factor to take into consideration. Practices that have been established for a few years will have more experience in handling workloads and the processes required to run a veterinarian office, allowing them to focus more attention precisely on your pets. Newer practices may still be finding their way and would have to focus more on managing workloads, establishing in-office practices, etc. There is nothing wrong with choosing a newer clinic, as long as you verify their credentials and make sure they are a legitimate practice.

Specialization

Another factor to consider is whether the veterinarian specializes in large breed, small breed, or both breeds of animals. Some veterinarians may only focus on smaller breeds, while others may be more adept at treating larger animals. Others may be more general and specialize in both. Finding an office that is adept at treating the specific breed of your pet is important.

The Pavilion Crossing Animal Hospital team would love to welcome you to the family and provide treatment for your pets. At our clinic, you should feel comfortable asking any questions you deem important so that our team can provide you with more insight into our practice.
