Dog and cats get bacterial infections, fleas, mites, moist dermatitis, food, and environmental allergies. When you call about skin problems, we will make an appointment for you to come in for a checkup for your dog or cat because we take this very seriously. Some of the top reasons owners bring in their dogs or cats are skin infections, lumps, and bumps on the skin, ear infections, scratching, and skin conditions.

Coming In For a Pet Dermatology Appointment

When you bring your pet in for a dermatology appointment our veterinarian or technician will explain some of the tests used to make a diagnosis on your pet. It takes time to analyze test results and our team will perform tests carefully and safely. The way we will find parasites that produce skin conditions with our flea combing and coat brushing test. This is the way the vet looks for fleas in the coat and other parasites. They remove any debris and have it analyzed by the lab. Another test used is a paper towel test that looks for flea waste or parasite waste after brushing. This often creates a reddish-brown stain on the paper towel. We disinfect and sanitize all combs and brushes used on your pet.

We sometimes use skin scrapings to determine more serious skin conditions by using a small blade dipped in mineral oil to get a skin sample. We transfer the sample to a slide and have it analyzed. We use this test to look for serious skin conditions in dogs and cats. It is used for pruritus, seborrhea, alopecia, and other skin conditions. Often, we examine your pet’s ears for mites and other parasites using proper instruments and sterile gauze. We sometimes replace skin scaping with taping or hair plucking.

Our veterinarian often does the most invasive test at the end of the appointment and tries to include all the tests needed in one price or package. We may perform tests for ringworm, use the wood lamp test, perform biopsies, and remove hairs to be examined. Sedation can be used for some tests. We will provide a diagnosis and treatment when test results come in. You may be prescribed oral medications, antibody shots, or allergy serums. These conditions are treated with shampoos, creams, drops, ointments, and sprays. These are some of the treatments for our animal dermatology service.
