US FDA Grain-Free Diet Study

With all the recent hoopla of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) and grain-free diets, it is imperative to know the suitable diets for dogs approved by the FDA. Luckily, the US FDA Grain-free Diet study with all the trends of new human diets, many are changing their dog’s diets as well. It is imperative to speak with your veterinarian regarding the best diet for your pet. A new and on going US FDA study is collecting data that is showing there may be a link between grain-free diets and a very serious heart condition known as dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). While the study is still ongoing, there is supportive evidence that shows that pets on grain-free diets are developing DCM at a much higher rate than those pets that are not on a grain free diet. If you are feeding your dog a grain-free diet, and your pet has not been diagnosed with a grain allergy, we recommend having a discussion with one of our veterinarians regarding other diet options that may be safer for your pet!

A Balanced FDA-approved Diet for Dogs

The FDA ensures the safety of pet foods by ensuring dog food labels are truthful in showing its ingredients. With FDA regulations, consumers can have peace of mind knowing that the food is safe for their dog to eat, that the food has no harmful substances, and it was made under sanitary conditions. The FDA also tests claims of pet food manufacturers to make sure these claims are true. For instance, if the dog food package states that it helps manage your dog’s cholesterol, this agency tests it to determine whether this claim is true. If it’s not true, the manufacturer can’t put it on the package.

The FDA works with other organizations and veterinarians who take pride in their work and love pets. And as a result, they know that while the majority of a canine’s diet should be meat, it should also include tons of nutrients from fruits, vegetables, and grains. Giving your furry pal pet treats is good as a snack, and it is alright to give in to your pooch pouting for the good, sizzling smell of bacon by giving them a piece of bacon occasionally. However, these top-notch pet food specifically made for your pooch are also essential for a complete, balanced diet, even though those foods don’t look appealing to us.
