As a pet owner, you want the best for your furry companion. Staying on top of the latest information on cat and dog food recalls can help you make informed decisions about your pet’s health. Our veterinary team in Riverview, FL has compiled a list of pet foods recalled to keep you up-to-date.
In March, Midwestern Pet Foods issued a voluntary recall for certain dog and cat foods. The recalled items fell within specific expiration dates. The pet foods were recalled because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The Midwestern Pet Foods recall list includes a number of brands including CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Meridian, Pro Pac, Sportmix, Unrefined, Venture, and more. The potentially contaminated products were manufactured in the Monmouth, Illinois facility which is identified by an “M” on the date code.
Infected pet food products pose a risk to pets and to humans. Dogs and cats are exposed and put at risk if they consume contaminated products. Humans who handle the products, especially if they do not thoroughly wash their hands, could also become sick.
Salmonella are a group of bacteria that cause a foodborne illness called salmonellosis. The bacteria are born or carried on food and then live in the intestines of humans or animals. They can contaminate a variety of foods, pet foods, and pet treats and lead to abdominal illness.
Animals who consume Salmonella-contaminated products may show the following signs of an infection:
Not all pets who consume the products will become seriously ill. Some pets have mild symptoms; whereas, others have more severe problems. Pets that are infected but healthy may not show outward signs but may be carriers who can infect other humans or animals. If your dog or cat has consumed one of the recalled products and is showing signs of illness, contact your veterinarian immediately.
